Finding a winner tougher than an old boot
The Sydney carnival has finished and it couldn’t come quick enough. While it was great to see Haradasun string together a few wins - even while almost running into the grandstand - I just couldn’t seem to pick my nose. 3 more quaddies down the toilet (2 of the 3 with the obligatory 3 legs and 2nd / 3rd in the other). And to top it all off, G Waterhouse has a red letter day (although it’s hard to not be impressed with old Desert War who is becoming a real favourite of the mug).
There must have been a sign of things to come when, as watching the Saints get completely towelled up by the Lions at the Moreland (well, 3 quarters worth before the kicked us out), we picked out the Valley night racing quaddie only to miss the kick and then watch longingly as leg after leg invariably came in.
On top of this the Mug moved to a new betting strategy - 1 or 2 bigger bets rather than 20 small bets - great decision!
On Saturday, $10 on the nose on Gorky Park in the Derby disappeared at the top of the straight. $10 on the nose on Maloose is slaughtered by Danny Brereton - an absolute moral beaten. A $20 quaddie on the same day in Melbourne died in the first leg while watching the next 3 legs land.
Then on Monday another $20 quaddie lands 2 legs with 2 seconds, while $10 on the nose on Divine Madonna is wrecked by the rain.
And finally yesterday the quaddie dies in the first leg (not even close, really) and the Sydney cup spruik Southern Courage runs stone motherless last.
The joys of punting. Bring on the winter!!
